Review of Nim's Island (2008) by Vijay M — 29 Sep 2008
Yes, it's implausible, the characters are simplistic and many of the events require HUGE suspension of disbelief, but it IS a kid's fantasy movie. What do you expect? So taken for what it is, it's really quite cute! Abigail is a terrific lead for a kid's adventure story, Gerard is the dad who can do no wrong and is his daughter's hero, and Jodie is quite amusing as a severely agoraphobic writer who hasn't left her apartment in years.
The special effects are good, and the story is exactly what a highly imaginative kid would conjure up. So remember: it's a KID's movie. Don't judge it based on your adult expectations.
