Review of Nil by Mouth (1997) by Johan S — 04 Nov 2011
A great drama with some brilliant, flawless performances that is brought down by a very unfocused "plot" and an enormous length issue. The film runs for over two hours, but in that span of time, it has very little to say. The theme of general abuse is present but thin, and by this time, unoriginal; the color schemes in the sometimes sloppy filming don't ever seem to reach the level of art or sociopolitical commentary, but the documentary-like performances in "Nil By Mouth" keep it afloat. Many painful, hard-to-watch sequences and an abundance of use of the word "c**t" will likely scare many viewers away, but for those seasoned film-goers, "Nil By Mouth" is well-written and very well-acted, if fatally flawed in other departments.
6.6.
