Review of Nightwatch (1997) by Carol S — 14 Oct 2007
Okay, points for a good setup: A student takes a night-watchman job at a morgue to pay the bills, only to get drawn into a serial killer investigation. More points for some truly weird setup scenes, where we meet the cast and get a look around the place.
However, it doesn't help matters when two characters practically have the words "RED HERRING" written on their foreheads. If you're half awake, you'll probably know what odd character traits to disregard, and which ominous statements to understand as key.
Strangely enough, Josh Brolin's character explains what's wrong with the movie, in some random dialogue: The scenes where Ewan McGregor creeps himself out, then adapts to the morgue, are far more interesting than the thriller plot, which eventually takes over.
Keeping the minimalist approach might have made this something special.
