Review of Nights of Cabiria (1957) by Devin R — 04 Nov 2007
Well I guess the third time really is the charm. Nights of Cabiria is my third Fellini film, and finally, I found one I enjoyed. Giulietta Masina plays Cabiria, a wide-eyed streetwalker living in a poor section of Rome where she owns her little house, has a small bank account, and dreams of a miracle.
We follow her as we see a string of bad relationships with men fall apart. Will she ever meet a man who will appreciate her for who she is? Despite a constant broken heart thereâ??s always hope in her eyes, and he carries on with life; hoping one day soon sheâ??ll met Mr.
Right. I think this is the first Italian film that I actually enjoyed watching, and I think itâ??s because itâ??s quite the opposite from Felliniâ??s other films Iâ??ve seen. Unlike La Dolce Vita and 8 ½, this film doesnâ??t follow a rich, suave man living in high-society; itâ??s just the opposite.
Masinaâ??s performace is tender and full of optimistic energy; itâ??s hard not to root for her, and itâ??s her performance that makes this film work.
