Review of Nights of Cabiria (1957) by Brian S — 11 Aug 2008
A magnificent and haunting tragedy that incorporates the stylistic melancholy and gritty reality of Italian Neo-Realism and Fellini's trademark brand of vivaciousness and passion, as well as a somewhat Bergmanesque religious perspective.
Masina's performance is touchingly brilliant, adding a touch of brashness and moxy to her innocence and naivete from La Strada. the opening and ending scenes parallel each other beautifully in a way that's almost poetic, while the final parade scene returns the film to a sense of hope and a feeling of "life goes on": a poignant message not only for the film and the era, but for anyone.
