Review of Nights of Cabiria (1957) by Hari S — 13 Feb 2009
A very well made picture, with fine writing and performances around, especially the lead actress. If I have any problems it would be my own. I just had a hard time liking the main character because she is just such a creep to people and her naivety bordered on retardation at times.
She eventually won me over as she started to get a clue, but even then she does some incredibly idiotic things that make me just say "Oh come on!". Although it's not completely her fault, since it seems like almost everyone here either wants to have sex with her or rob her.
Fellinni obviously doesn't trust human nature that much since there are very few good people in this movie who don't wear church robes. It's not that it's bad to think so, but he has almost nothing that makes anyone but the lead character redeemable.
Worst has to be the way some people become evil, as if they forgot these men were trying to con her. But no, they just suddenly become jerks and creeps in the blink of an eye at times. Still, it's a very well done film and worth watching for the laughs and memorable moments along the way.
