Review of Nights of Cabiria (1957) by Bf E — 28 Jan 2011
Nights of Cabiria has been beautifully restored and includes valuable bonus material. It won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film (1957), but is not one of Fellini's best. I found Giulietta Masina's broad gestures and overly-demonstrative facial expressions so obviously clown-like, that it was difficult to empathize with her character.
Perhaps this was Fellini's device in keeping the viewer sufficiently involved, but emotionally removed from the extreme tragedy of Cabiria's experience. There is no resolution or happy ending here; but I suppose that is a suitable message about the life of prostitution.
Hollywood made "Pretty Woman;" Fellini gave us true grit.
