Although the writing for the protagonist's surrounding characters fails to portray believable reactions to Lou's obtrusively insane actions, as well as some of James Newton Howard's music (at times) failing to coalesce with the emotional essence of many scenes, 'Nightcrawler' is a provocative, turbulent and disturbing investigation into the sociopathic mind, elevated by a standout heart-stopping performance from Jake Gyllenhaal.
