Review of Nightcrawler (2014) by Andy N — 17 May 2015
Talk about a weird fucking movie. Good, bad, just throw those old ideas out the window when watching Nightcrawler. It's not really all that suspenseful, but it is beautifully shot and pretty well acted.
Jake Gyllenhaal does his best to be creepy and unlikeable and it succeeds. The problem with films like these, is that there, normally is something at least likeable and or redeemable about the character, but Lou Bloom is not a good character.
He's a slimy piece of shit, and unfortunately that's not really what keeps me watching a movie and or engaged. The cinematography is stunning though and it's a good performance. It's a hard movie for me to rate because there is no likeable character among the bunch and it goes about saying what has been said in other movies recently about how the media shows us a skewed view on reality and what not.
Renee Russo also does a good job here, but again, no likeable characters, a bizarre story--a good one--but bizarre. I think the story, cinematography, acting, and direction are all really, really good.
..but bizarre. I couldn't look away, but I didn't really have any other reason to keep watching other than I rented it because I thought it could be good so in other words, I already spent the money and that's that.
