Jake Gyllenhaal is magnificent as an outsider who enters the TV news profession and ruthlessly carves out success. This is brilliant satire. I disagree with the notion that this is somehow intended as a media satire.
TV news is just the arena this satire is set in ... it's target is much deeper than that. It's mostly about how the American idea of success is so closely tied to raging sociopathic behavior.
