Review of Nightcrawler (2014) by Jax R — 17 Apr 2015
An unsettling tale about the perverted morality of modern media. Not exactly covering new territory here but Nightcrawler's performances make it stand out above similar films. Gyllenhaal is virtually unrecognisable as the sociopathic Lou who will stop at nothing to succeed and earn respect of those in power.
His insidious, deadpan delivery creates an unease every time he's on screen. Easily his best performance to date. Great to see Rene Russo back in a role of depth and substance too. The slightly out of place 80s synth-guitar soundtrack aside, this is a tense thriller that delivers its shocks and keeps it's audience on the edge of their seats.
