Gyllenhaal's performance fuels this suspenseful critique against modern news coverage that values gore filled, fear-mongering as opposed to actual facts and helpful information. Gyllenhaal's character makes you squirm as his sociopathic tendencies distance him from humanity as he furthers plan to achieve his goal.
The score's eclectic sound give voice to Gyllenhaal's stoic emotions and often contrast the images being shown. This film forces viewers to question the reliability and morality of 24 hour news, as well as the desperate nature human psyche to achieve its goals.
