Review of Nightcrawler (2014) by Jd S — 18 Jan 2016
Lou Bloom is a passionately driven, sociopathic capitalist who is willing to do whatever it takes to climb his way up the rungs of the economic ladder. When he discovers his own talent for crime journalism, Bloom's drive to earn his keep lands him in questionable moral territory very quickly, and the protagonist you started off pitying slowly becomes the antagonist whose every success makes you cringe.
Jake Gyllenhaal has offered up the performance of a lifetime in this thrilling and dark look into contemporary Western news media, opening our eyes to serious moral considerations and making us wonder how cold we have all become to the harsh reality of death when it is mediated through screens of entertainment.
