Review of Nightcrawler (2014) by Jeff B — 15 Jun 2016
** Spoilers **.
The movie is well acted and directed. Gyllenhaal is excellent, as always, as Louis, in a demanding role as a sociopath willing to go to any length to find, and in the end create, the most disturbing news reels footage. However, the movie is undone by too many red herrings of Louis' own undoing. I don't mind a pessimistic ending, but his character obviously goes way too far, and gives himself plenty of rope to hang himself. Despite all the hints that his plans will be undone, the movie abruptly ignores all the clues to attempt a stinging ending. It felt forced and sudden, as if the writers were afraid to betray their admonishment of the news industry. In the end I think it undermined the message.
