Review of Nightcrawler (2014) by Peter F — 13 Oct 2016
A noir-ish exploration on sensational journalism that's actually one of the year's best surprises. First time director Dan Gilroy does a very commendable job of taking viewers into the world of his Los Angelas, which happens to be a particularly seedy one.
Nightcrawler looks at the flaws of the media system's regulations, as well as the do-or-die struggle in the tough economic market, and the thematic catalyst can be seen through the enigmatic protagonist/antagonist.
Jake Gyllenhaal gives perhaps his best work to date here as a complex character who is seemingly bereft of morals, yet still admirable in his logic regarding business. Also, the ending potentially hints at a sequel, and right now I'm feeling I'd fully be on board!
