Review of Nightbreed (1990) by Todd C — 28 Jul 2009

"Nightbreed" is Clive Barker's twisted version of "X-Men" - with your "mutants versus humans" storyline complemented with gruesome gore and brutal killings. At some point, Barker loses control of the plot, and it all becomes nothing more than a dizzying parade of monstrous freaks on film.

I respect the movie for its imagination, but at the same time couldn't ignore the cheese factor - especially some of the monsters' ridiculous looking makeup and the less-than-stellar acting. It was, however, interesting to see David Cronenberg as the crazed psychotherapist.

"Nightbreed" is worth seeing if you want to be mindlessly distracted for a solid hour - otherwise, it's a pretty forgettable Clive Barker affair.
