Review of Nightbreed (1990) by Eduardo C — 11 Apr 2007
In spite of its incredibly cheesy poster, this film is a surprisingly strong, serious, entry into the horror genre which also comes closest (even more so than hellraiser) to truly translating Clive Barker's writing to the screen.
The make-up effects are AMAZING, some of the best I've ever seen in some cases, and this was a low budget affair. The company which worked on the film's creatures should work on every single genre film that is ever made and be compensated handsomely for it, they are that good.
This film also has David Cronnenberg in a major role, and the guy is creepy as all hell. His character is next to unforgettable.
The screenplay is alternatingly strong and wanting, no doubt a reflection of the budgetary constraints which forced Clive Barker to compromise. As a whole, though this is easily one of the best horror films of the 1990's (though in all fairness, that's not saying much) and one of the most imaginative contemporary genre entries, period.
