Review of Night Shift (1982) by Trey H — 06 Feb 2011
Michael Keaton's first film role and one of his funniest. "Night Shift" is an absolute blast from start to finish and thoroughly holds up big laughs nearly thirty years later.
Way ahead of it's time, Night Shift tells the story of Chuck Lumley (Henry Winkler), a morgue attendant who gets shoved back to the overnight shift and gets put with a new obnoxiously absurd partner, Bill (played wonderfully by Michael Keaton). In fact even today, if this were to get remade (and I pray dearly that no one ever remakes this), no one could ever pull off the role of Bill as amazingly as Michael Keaton does. He's just perfect in it. These two come up with an idea to turn their morgue into a prostitution ring after Chuck's neighbor, Belinda (Shelly Long, who happens to play a prostitute here) is looking for a new Pimp because hers was killed. You can only imagine the hi-jinks that follow.
Director Ron Howard strikes comedic gold with this, turning Michael Keaton into an overnight sensation. Did I mention nearly every scene Keaton is in is a scene stealer? Yep...watch this one.
