Review of Night Passage (1957) by Private U — 21 Jul 2008
Highly underrated western, partially because anthony mann, the original director, dropped out early on due to conflicts with Jimmy Stewart's character in the movie. Though probably not what Mann had originally envisioned, what did get made was a great western.
Stewart does a great job as usual as the lanky hero, pulling out his accordion on many occasions. The is partly why some people didn't like; they thought it was a Stewart music piece. However the accordion plays a vital role in the move in contrasting his past to his present and his relationship with his younger brother.
Which leads to Audie Murphy who stands out as the second-fiddle bad guy and main adversary to Stewart. The real scene stealer is the cinematography; the scenery is top notch, the train scenes are classic, and the final shootout in a ghost town is an added touch.
