Review of Night on Earth (1991) by Justin S — 24 Oct 2007
A quintessential Jarmusch picture (I guess all of his films are, really). Like a collection of short stories, in the classical American style. Jarmusch's Helsinki looks like Rome, which looks like Paris, which looks like Brooklyn, which looks like LA.
It's really a very abitious idea, this film: five different stories in five different cities, all occurring simultaneously. All of this (plus great, great, great performances by Roberto Benigni, Gena Rowlands and Giancarlo Esposito) is brought together by Tom Waits' music and each story's primary setting: a taxi cab.
