Review of Night on Earth (1991) by Richard S — 15 Nov 2007
Apart from some awkwardness on the behalf of Rider's taxi driver, this is a mesmerizing example of Jarmusch's (and Waits') unique vision. Each sequence has strengths, but preferred Paris and Helsinki because they captured the broadest range of emotion.
I'm glad that I wasn't able to see this until I moved to a city where I'm forced to rely on late night taxis more often than ever before. Now that I've had more than a few taxi adventures I can appreciate Jim's exploration of the momentary bonds that can be formed at 3 A.
M.. If anything, my experiences have shown that these aren't "characters", but real people who I could meet tomorrow or next weekend or next year.
