Review of Night of the Living Dead (1990) by Clarice M — 04 Apr 2008
Blah. Ick. Yawn. A firm "No." I didn't understand the need to remake the original in the first place, but I decided to give Savini's effort its due chance. And lo! I was right to begin w/.
The fact that it is updated to color? Destroys the entire feel. It turns it into a "sci-fi movie of the week." The characters are no longer dynamic in themselves or their interaction and instead cross that dangerous, dreaded line into caricature.
(NOTE: I didn't quite mind the "new" Barbara, but more like what Savini did w/ her). The entire concept that so infused the original fell flat. The ending pissed me off. Why the frak mess w/ that?! It's only one of the -- at least I think -- greatest endings to a film.
That gleefully cold, brutal, clean-cut cynicism was completely manhandled and left in ruin. This ending meant something different. Though I suppose it was fitting considering the entire film that preceded it.
