Review of Night of the Living Dead (1990) by Mike M — 01 Nov 2013
The original producers of Night of the Living Dead have remade their own cult classic in a crass bit of cinematic grave-robbing. Tom Savini's 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead is faithful--loving, even--but almost entirely free of the original's gravitas. Completely unnecessary but not-terrible remake tells the exact same story with a few twists. Savini provides a controversial alteration by taking Barbra and transforming her in to a warrior woman who takes it upon herself to fight back mid-way in to the movie. Another brilliant casting decision involves Tony Todd as Ben, and he grabs on to the role and makes it his own. Savini does let his actors overact at sereval tense moments, which almost makes the film funny unintentionally. This is certainly a flawed remake but better than expected. Savini offers up his own twist on Romero's premise with gore, disturbing special effects, sharp performances, and a gritty bleak atmosphere that keeps this remake admirable and entertaining. If you can detach yourself from the original, you may just have a blast with this one.
VERDICT: "In The Zone" - [Mixed Reaction] These kinds of movies are usually movies that had some good things, but some bad things kept it from being amazing. This rating says buy an ex-rental or a cheap price of the DVD to own. If you consider cinema, ask for people's opinion on the film... (Films that are rated 2.5 or 3 stars).
