Review of Night of the Lepus (1972) by Simon L — 29 Sep 2008
Now this is the stuff that legends are made of. Yes, this is the movie that asks us to believe that giant, killer bunny rabbits are rampaging through the country side, and that it's something we should experience genuine terror over.
Yeah, I know. Really. Even if Lepus had a halfway convincing horde of monsters, though, it would still be a sorry, pathetic bit of film. None of the cast (including DeForest Kelly, who would give up trying to be anything other than Dr.
McCoy after this) manages to convey any emotions other than boredom, embarasment, and maybe heat stroke. The direction is the very worst sort of early 70s grindhouse slop, especially during the night shots.
Oh, and don't forget the hilariously unrealistic plot driving this whole thing. But let's not kid ourselves, this is all about the killer bunnies, and that's all you'll remember once the credits roll.
I'm sorry, but extreme closeups of cuddly bunnies with fake gore splattered on their faces will NEVER stop being a laugh riot. Anyone who finds even the faintest ammusement in special effects gone horribly wrong MUST see Night of the Lepus.
