One of the under-seen genre gems of the 1980s, NIGHT OF THE COMET is a lot of fun, a prime cut slice of B-movie entertainment which puts a fresh (for the time) spin on the tired tropes of the zombie film.

A love of sci-fi/horror movies is very much in evidence throughout, and the film takes itself just seriously enough to avoid tipping over into farce or spoof territory; still, those seeking a hardcore exercise in terror are apt to be disappointed, as the movie is far more concerned with being fun than being scary.

The script is inventive and clever, and it takes some narrative turns that I doubt many people would be able to see coming, which is just another way of saying that it's more involved than your typical quote-unquote "zombie film" usually is; indeed, the actual plot ends up being a bit too convoluted for its own good, but that adds an extra element of charm to the whole thing, in my opinion.

It's also worth noting that having the two leads be teenage sisters gives the movie an interesting and unique vibe, as sci-fi/horror films (particularly those with a somewhat fun or comedic edge) are often male-centric; Stewart and Maroney are great as the sisters, and they bring a real sense of energy to their relationship that - again - sets the film apart from others of this ilk.

The whole thing is very, very '80s, but that's part of the appeal, and for those so inclined, it's a pretty darn entertaining package.
