Review of Night Moves (2014) by Josè M — 12 Jan 2015
Tense and quiet, Night Moves fascinatingly unfolds through its characters, allowing the viewer to draw conclusions. I really enjoyed Reichardt's minimalist, objective direction and the simple yet morally complex story.
Jesse Eisenberg and Dakota Fanning's are both great, their characters realistically defined through subtleties. The whole thing feels very natural, with the movieness we've come to expect from movies abandoned, which is what I liked best about it.
Reichardt shows us a fairly simple story driven by realistic characters that's quietly thrilling and haunting, but very indirect about what it's saying. It puts a story in front of us and doesn't interfere, leaving the audience to decide what they think and I like that, but I felt like the movie could have sparked a little more.
I didn't feel like it touched on anything all that large and it won't stick with me for days, but what Reichardt accomplished here makes me want to see more of her films.
