Review of 'night, Mother (1986) by Bass 9 — 27 Mar 2013
'Night Mother is an excellent example of natural, unforced, devastating acting between a duo. Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft are spectacular. The subject matter is rough, and Jessie's calm awareness of the fact that she's about to kill herself is deeply heartbreaking.
Marsha Norman's exceptional play got a very good screen adaptation, with her writing the screenplay and the play's director behind the camera. Its structure slips from movie mode at times and wanders into stage territory, but it doesn't matter.
'Night Mother is compelling either way.
