There's a good movie in here and a unique one at that, based on how underrepresented this time and place in history is in cinema, but Hamilton just does not have a strong enough hand to guide it. The film seems to be playing catch up to its ideas and despite the best efforts of Mackie and Washington, it never really makes it.
