Review of Night and the City (1950) by Ben W — 01 Sep 2008
The best way to describe this film in 3 words: Ni. Hil. Ism.
Seriously, this film while I must admit that its really a great piece of cinema, is terribly bleak. but that doesnt mean its bad. widmark plays a character that you know wont survive the movie and he plays it pretty well even though you just want to yell at the screen to stop being a retard and just get a regular job. the whole film is rife with tension, especially the wrestling match, and the climactic chase scene near the end. but there are also some amazing quiet moments, most notably the last moments of gregorius. the film is so moody and atmospheric that its hard not to get wrapped up in the whole thing. and it really does feel like a scorsese movie.
