Review of Night and the City (1950) by Noel V — 26 Apr 2012
Dassin's film takes the foggy city of London and turns it into an existential condition, takes Widmark's predicament and turns it into the kind of low flying trajectory any and all who have suffered loss and reversal can completely understand.
It's not just about con artists and wrestling, but about honor and ignominity, dreams and delusion, ascent and plunge. It's Dassin's masterpiece and one of the greatest noirs ever made.
