Review of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (2008) by Jeffrey G — 13 Aug 2012
As one might imagine, the best thing about "Nick and Norah's" is, well, the playlist. Great soundtrack. There are moments of absolute adorableness in the film, and genuine tenderness. Ultimately, however, it's sabotaged by a sense of "been there-done that"; mainly in Cera's "performance" (will this kid STOP. PLAYING. HIMSELF. already?); a desperate desire to be "indie"; and teen movie tropes such as the gay-friends-who-need-to-fix-up-their-straight-pal, etc.
And the ever-famous "gum joke"? It actually detracts from the film, as it sabotages every moment that might have been sweet or genuine that comes after it, since we're ALWAYS thinking about where that gum was.
I had high hopes. Bummer.
