Review of Nicholas and Alexandra (1971) by Debra D — 14 Apr 2009
A sympathetic view of the last tsar and his family, which shows him as a warm and sympathetic father but as an individual totally unsuited to be an autocrat and not flexible enough to be a constitutional monarch.
The Spanish royal palaces stand in well for Petersburg. Tom Baker is standout as Rasputin as is Irene Worth as the Dowager Empress. Michael Jayston and Janet Suzman as the eponymous pair develop a sympathetic relationship which seems to deepen as they lose their imperial power.
For fans of the historical epic.
