Review of Next Gen (2018) by Afm185 — 21 Jun 2020
This movie does a few things right: the animation is beautiful. Like every single frame looks great. It’s fair to say the way this movie looks, in every aspect, great. Character design, world design, action, and so on.
The world they’ve created is really cool. It’s futuristic in a way that makes sense. Apparently this is based off some kinda book or probably a manga given it looks pretty anime. The story is good in concept, if pretty cliche.
The voice acting from John Krasinski and Jason Sudeikis is great as well. Everything else is bad. The writing in this movie is traaaaaaaaash. I hated the main girl, May or Mei or however you spell it.
I hated her mom. I hated the other kids. Jason Sudeikis’ is good. And Project 7723. He’s cute. There’s this scientist guy I liked too actually. And this is like a super tiny spoiler but 7723 can hear what May’s dog is saying and I **** hated it.
Ruined the dog for me. At first this thing was adorable but then it gets Michael Pena’s voice and starts cursing a bunch and talking like a wannabe gangster I hate it so much. The dialogue, aside from the exceptions I’ve pointed out already, is.
So. Bad. It’s a damn shame too because this movie coulda been like an 8 if everything came together nicely. It started off pretty well, and the part before the ending is very good, but after a certain point I was just annoyed with the writing so often I couldn’t take anything seriously.
Oh and the music is noticeably bad too. Ugh. For the things it does right, though, it became bearable enough that it didn’t feel as long as it actually was. Which is something I can commend it for. I don’t fully regret watching this thing, but I was hoping for more.
