Review of Next Gen (2018) by Darrell J — 18 Sep 2018
Certainly visually stunning with a well designed world impressive action sequences and plenty of pop culture references. But otherwise a hot mess. Too many plot holes, lacked originality and characters were 2D.
There is literally a scene where the mom word vomits the summary of why she is a bad mom, apologises and tells Mai she loves her, Mai is the classic angsty teenager with a tough exterior but secretly craving love and acceptance. There are no other characters of note. I guess the dog is cute.
It's going for a iron Giant type robots save the humans and are victimised vibe but honestly I found the relationship contrived. I suspect pre-teens and people in the mood for mindless action with albeit stunning visuals will enjoy this. For others the lacklustre characters, lines and cartoonishly evil villain will leave them wanting.
