Review of Next Gen (2018) by Joeseph C — 17 Sep 2018
Next Gen follows the story of a teenage-aged girl through a futuristic world filled with modern technology, and most importantly, and abundance of robots. Although bearing possibility for an amazing story, Next Gen falls short in many places.
Cartoon violence fills the screen during most of the runtime and some mildly harsh language fills the rest, including a dog with an attitude that yells a bleeped cuss word almost every other sentence.
As well as the language and action, several scenes include animations which were slightly disturbing. The theme changes several times from the start, going from the importance of letting others help you, to family, to not letting your memories hold you back.
All of which are valuable lessons, but would be better portrayed in three separate stories, not all in one. The villains motive (SPOILER AHEAD) for wanting to kill everybody in the world are never clearly elaborated on, leaving us to wonder why.
Overall, it fits the bill for a Netflix film, but not quite a children's movie. Parents use caution when determining whether this movie advertised as a 'family movie' is really suitable for younger audiences.
Although it falls short in many places, Next Gen still holds a valuable lesson under the poor writing and action-packed animation that we should not let our bad memories hold us back.
