Review of Next (2007) by Alexander Z — 11 Nov 2009
Was a 4-star movie for most of it, then it all went downhill. I loved how they portrayed Cage's ability and the different variations of it, and it was simply fun to watch. Unfortunately, the plot drags it down and the ending is completely unimaginative. It's not thoughtful, and it really doesn't make the film any more ambiguous. It's just a cheap cop-out. It's not that I need closure, though that would be why many people hate the ending, it's that there's really only three outcomes. Either Cage saves the day and gets the girl, saves the day and doesn't get the girl, or he doesn't save the day and probably dies. There's no point to making the audience wonder how it ended up. These types of endings are nearly always unsatisfying for a multitude of reasons.
Also, it's worth mocking Cage's hair, and the chemistry between the love interests was simply not there. I blame the writers though. Cage had to deliver some exceptionally bad lines with a straight face. He should get a goddamned award for that.
