Review of Newsies (1992) by Jonathan A — 24 Jun 2008
Criminally underrated Disney musical about the 1899 newsboy strike. Great choreography and songs. The production design is fantastic and looks as though it was filmed in the late 60s a'la "Oliver" around the time where kid-helmed musicals were beginning to take off.
Most of the performances were fine although I felt Christian Bale was slightly miscast as the lead (He looked the same 16 years ago...just with even less facial expression). Not to mention an occasionally muddled script and story, but sooner or later, one of those kids starts belting and back-flipping so you end up forgiving and forgetting the film's obvious style over substance flaws and enjoy the show.
