Review of Newsies (1992) by Joseph A — 21 Aug 2008
I don't understand why this movie is so harshly judged. I first saw this movie when it opened in 1992. I hadn't heard of the movie (bad marketing?!) it played as a part of a double feature. To be honest, I can't remember what the other movie was, but I loved this movie back then and I love it even more now.
I have now have two young sons who dance along the newsies and jump around my living room fighting the bad guys. It is great that boys have a musical too. Aside from Peter Pan, there aren't too many non-princess type musicals for kids. Guess what--boys like music and dancing too.
This film also began my love affair with Christian Bale, he is great in this movie. He may not be the most talented singer, but the emotion was there.
I thought that the movie held a pretty accurate representation of how those kids probably would have behaved. The boys who played the Newsies all acted like boys act when they are together.
All in all, it is a fun movie with a historical perspective. I love watching this movie over and over and my kids love it too.
People need to lighten up.
