Review of New York Stories (1989) by Caleb S — 16 Jun 2008
The film is made in three segments of about 40 minutes, each completely separated from each other. The Allen segment is ok, the Coppola segment atrocious... I give 4/5 to the Scorsese segment. This is his best work, though I admit I'm not a fan of his other stuff.
Nolte as the troubled, parasitic artist Dobie is shocking and illuminating. He drags you in with his human need for companionship, drawing the viewer to his side as he reconnects with a lover he has previously hurt.
He then disgusts you with the way in which he abuses the deliberately faulty relationship as a tool in creating his art. He uses people he thinks he is close to like he uses his paints; to create art which he himself hates.
