Review of New Jack City (1991) by Adam K — 14 Jun 2007
The first time I saw this movie, I was ten years-old, and it was very powerful for me at the time. At that age, I had been exposed to enough culture to appreciate the basic value of the movie, but it wasn't until adulthood that I really grasped the beauty of the film.
Snipes's portrayal of Nino Brown was perfect a cold, calculating drug lord. The movie keeps you on the edge of your seat, and yet it is not a thriller, but a true-to-life drama about the crack cocaine epidemic faced by American inner cities.
Probably the only movie I have ever seen that was directed by Mario Van Peebles, and this is the only instance where you will see me giving credit to Van Peebles for anything. Kudos to him for casting Chris Rock in the role of Pookie; it is perhaps one of the most underrated performances by a black actor in the 1990's, and it is notably the only serious, dramatic role that Chris Rock has ever acted.
Every time I watch it, I wish Rock would attempt dramatic acting again.
