Review of New Jack City (1991) by Ashley H — 31 Jul 2011
New Jack City is a crime story which takes place in 80's New York as crack is a relatively new product which is taking over the streets. Wesley Snipes plays Nino Brown, the ruthless leader of a drug syndicate who runs the streets and shows very little emotion or love for anyone.
He is power hungry and two tough cops (Ice T and Judd Nelson) are assigned to bring him down. New Jack City plays like a good cop show on television. The plot is rather defined in the traditional cops vs.
drug dealer way. The film paints a gritty portrait of New York and the crime and drugs which are destroying the city from within. Wesley Snipes is great as the ruthless drug lord as is Chris Rock as Pootie, the crack addicted informant.
New Jack City is a good film but it doesn't bring anything particularly new to the genre. It's good but not great.
