"New in Town" was one of the most dismal movies I have ever seen. Truly wretched. There's absolutely nothing in the entire film that isn't trite and/or predictable. The acting is uninspired.

The direction is on the level of a bad direct-to-DVD project. The story is shallow. There is absolutely ZERO character development. Worst of all, it's a romantic comedy that offers no funny moments whatsoever.

There is one scene, where the female lead gets the zipper on her coveralls stuck and suddenly has to take a leak. Harry Connick JR is recruited to help her out...the end result being that he has to cut out the seat of her pants with a knife.

Funny? Not at all. Even worse is that they drag the whole debacle out to the point where you realize that the producers think they're onto a great comedic scene, something that might be memorable.

But it's not. It's just stupid. No, I'm not a connisseur of romantic comedies. But I've seen a few that were well made, so I know what they are good for. I rented this one for my wife, basically, but also because I was in the mood for something a little bit lighter than the movies I generally enjoy.

It would have been okay if "New in Town" had just been the visual equivalent of easy listening music. But no, not even that. A truly wretched hour and a half wasted. I should have known...I mean, how good can a movie with a title like "New in Town" be?
