Review of Neverwas (2005) by Thomas W — 04 Jul 2010
An underseen, non-theatrically released little film of subtlety and artistry (filmed beautifully in an autumn-set Vermont) with an exceptional cast featuring Aaron Eckhart, Ian McKellan, Nick Nolte, Alan Cumming, William Hurt, Jessica Lange, Vera Farmiga, Bill Bellamy and the late Brittany Murphy.
I think it can easily be seen as an over-the-top vehicle with whacked-over-the-head/forced emotion; but it can also be considered a delicate, nuanced little treasure with a deeply-moving center story about a young adult (Eckhart) learning some truth about his fantasy-writer father (Nolte) who seemed to have had lost touch with reality.
It is fanciful and "out-there" but with some patience I think it can be appreciated.
