Review of Never Let Me Go (2010) by Alex H — 26 Sep 2011
This is a beautiful film. Normally when I start my comments on a film saying how lovely it looks, it means there's little else to praise, but not here. This is elegant, restrained, repressed even.
Set in an alternativel universe where science is apparently ahead of our own reality, but everything else is about 30 years behind, Never Let me Go is an exploration of what it means to be human. At the heart of this is Carey Mulligan as Kathy H. Her performance is simply heartbreaking, but she's given a run for her money by Andrew Garfield and Keira Knightley.
This asks serious questions of its audience, and doesn't pull any punches (in a restrained, repressed kind of way) in showing the alternative reality in all its shame. Melancholic, dark and more than little depressing, this is a terrific film that deserves your fullest attention.
