Review of Never Let Me Go (2010) by Dave M — 11 Feb 2013
Mark Romanek finally returns to directing a feature after only directing the criminally underrated One Hour Photo. I avoided a lot of trailers and synopsis descriptions since I wanted to go in knowing as little as possible about Never Let Me Go.
It wasn't exactly what I expected, and it didn't have me screaming "Oscar!" but it held my interest and was a damn good looking film. Everyone gives great performances, and it looks about as poetic as you can get.
The movie never really puts anything up on front street, and leaves the viewer to interpret all the subtext. It was one of those movies you gotta work with to understand, except that doesn't always make for an enjoyable movie going experience.
It's a dry movie but it's well made. There's a lot of romance, some science fiction, and loads of emotion. I'd rather not give too much away for those who wish to see it because not knowing everything before you see it is the whole point of the story; it has to slowly reveal itself.
Did you see Atonement? Did you like it? If so, then maybe Never Let Me Go is the right flick for you.
