Review of Never Been Kissed (1999) by Judith S — 29 Mar 2010
In addition to my Kubrick class, I'm also taking a class on romantic comedies this quarter. We started with Never Been Kissed, as it's a very basic example of the genre, a quintessential melting pot of cliches with the lump-in-the-throat happy ending. Thankfully, the cast is fantastic and the writing is pretty sharp, making good use of its premise and providing an important (though obvious) social commentary on high school life. Some clever editing adds extra moments of meaning, and the romantic payoff is exceptionally satisfying.
Next up in this class: It Happened One Night. And eventually, I will be watching (500) Days of Summer for class. Looking forward to that.
