Review of Never Back Down (2008) by Evan L — 09 Nov 2009
So when this movie came out I gave it absolutely no chance and only recently watched it based on a recommendation from a friend. But I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. This is not the kind of movie that will win any awards and it?s a story that?s been done several times before, but it was done in a way that I was entertained. And really isn?t that the point to a movie.
Never Back Down is your typical martial arts movie that is trying to play off the current popularity of mixed martial arts. I think I?d best describe this movie as a mix between Bloodsport, The Karate Kid, and Gladiator(Cuba Gooding Jr., not Russel Crowe). Basically kid gets mixed up in underground fight club and learns to fight and a lot about himself to become a better fighter.
So if you enjoy these kinds of movies I?d definitely give it a rent. But I wouldn?t recommend this to someone who wants to get started with martial arts movies. There are many better movies in this genre to get you excited about it.
