Review of Network (1976) by Doug B — 11 Sep 2009
Network is a brilliant, dark comedy, that has only become more and more poignant with its message as the years have gone by. Once you watch it, you'll realize that this satirical take on the news from the 70's, has become a mirror image of the news media we have in this country today.
There is TONS of exposition in this movie, which normally I would find excessive...but for this movie, it's the only way to go. Peter Finch is wonderful in his last ever performance, and the supporting cast of Faye Dunaway, William Holden, and Robert Duvall do nothing but add great support.
Even Ned Beatty gets to show off his acting chops in his short, but memorable role as Arthur Jensen. Many people remember the "Mad as Hell" speech from Finch, but I've always liked Beatty's "Primal Forces of Nature" speech even more.
If you're a fan of well-written, entertaining, and smart satire, Network is the movie for you.
