Review of Network (1976) by Martha M — 15 Feb 2011
Drop the âSocialâ?rewind to 1976 and you have a filmic masterpiece that deals with a device that much like the internet was at the forefront of redefining ideology â" the television. An old school concept for some, what with the advent of cyber cinema and the practice of watching everything on your laptop or computer, yet the idea of broadcasted news and zeitgeist enshrined in your favourite sitcoms and films in the hands of a powerful few still rings true today.
Although set in a time before I was born âNetworkâ? successfully and sensationally expresses human angst in a time where technology has become the voice of reason and is responsible for everything you think, do and say.
With his long ranting sermons sucker punching viewers in every line and the unforgiving manner in which they decry the very device on which they are broadcast is a cinematic event NOT TO BE MISSED. âNetworkâ? is a film that will long be held high as a pinnacle of scripting, filmmaking and acting.
They just donâ(TM)t make films like this in anymore and what a pity that is. Timeless... and terrifically told.
