Review of Network (1976) by Henry I — 22 Oct 2011
After news-reader Howard Beale (Peter Finch) is fired on a two-weeks notice, he goes on air rambling about the controversy times they live in. After the shock broadcast, the network bosses (Robert Duvall, Ned Beatty etc.) debate wheter to fire him or to keep him in the air, as their viewer ratings starts to climb. Cynical TV boss Diana Christensen (Faye Dunaway) sees Beale as a viewer magnet and starts to build him a show, while other TV boss & Beale best friend Max Schumacher (William Holden) is worried a his friend and his crumbling mental health.
"Network" was a very cruel show-and-tell about the TV industries and the networks. Success can be found without a sense of morality and common human feelings. There was also a great debate about the age difference in TV industry, Schumacher & Christensen, the two TV bosses from different eras. But the movie was, while quite interesting, a little too long in my opinion.
In the end, "Network" was full of good performances and a interesting story fueled with great dialogue. One of those films you should watch, at least once.
